Presidential Contender: Rudy Giuliani

This week's 2008 presidential contender profile is on former New York city mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani has shot up to the top of the GOP field which is somewhat surprising due to his personal history (3 wives) and some of his political stances.

Issues:

Fiscal Responsibility: cut bureaucracy other than law enforcement and education.

Taxes: Supports supply-side economics.

Iraq: Against timetable, stay in until job is done, supports surge.

Judges: Would appoint Scalia type judges

Education: increase funding, supports charter schools

Abortion: Pro-Choice

Gun Control: supports gun-control

Gay marriage: supports civil unions

So far Rudy's unpopular social views have not hurt him, but there is a possibility that they still could. I believe Rudy's strength shows that the Republicans as a whole are scared, so they have become willing to give up to a large extent at least for the short term on several issues that have been key to them in the past such as gun control, abortion, and Gay marriage. Rudy would definitely be the strongest candidate for the GOP, but I'm still not convinced that the Republicans will indeed go for Rudy. I personally will not vote for Rudy because he is an obnoxious Yankees fan.
